The Emergency Relief Team Volunteer serves a vital role in supporting The Salvation Army’s mission to respond quickly and compassionately during emergencies and disasters in Solano County. By assisting alongside Salvation Army staff, volunteers will help meet the practical, emotional, and spiritual needs of individuals, families, and first responders in times of crisis. This role ensures that when disaster strikes, The Salvation Army is equipped to bring comfort, hope, and immediate relief.
Responsibilities:
Be available on-call to respond to emergency and disaster situations within Solano County.
Assist staff in distributing care such as food, water, and essential supplies.
Provide emotional support and encouragement to victims and/or first responders.
Help with logistics: carrying items, preparing meals, cleaning, organizing supplies, or assisting in planning next steps.
Participate in monthly team meetings to:
Receive training in basic disaster response skills
Prepare care packages for future use
Build fellowship with other volunteers and staff
Requirements:
Must be at least 18 years old
No prior experience required—training is provided
Dependable, flexible, and able to remain calm in high-stress situations
Compassionate, with a heart for helping others in need
Physically able to assist with lifting, carrying, or other hands-on tasks (reasonable accommodations available)
Must be able to pass a background check
Schedule & Time Commitment:
Ongoing, on-call position with a minimum commitment of three calendar months (whether or not deployment is needed).
Monthly training/preparation meetings required (approx. 2 hours each).
Response times and duration vary depending on the nature of the emergency.
Additional Information:
Orientation and training in disaster response provided.
Volunteers may be eligible for service hour verification and letters of recommendation.
