The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services began offering assistance to disaster survivors after a devastating hurricane ripped through Galveston, Texas in September 1900. Since then, The Salvation Army has responded to numerous disasters to support affected communities. As one of the largest disaster-relief organizations in the country, The Salvation Army can be ready to respond within hours and develop plans unique to the community affected. Our core services may be modified based on the magnitude of the disaster, and adapted to meet the specific needs of the individual survivors.
Volunteers are the lifeblood of The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services. We depend on them to help provide compassion in the face of destruction and their service is critical to supporting disaster relief throughout Southern California. The goal of The Salvation Army’s disaster training program is to equip individuals to serve during times of crisis. Training courses are conducted on-line and in-person, utlizing the adult learning model that emphasizes group interaction and cooperative learning. Courses are developed by The Salvation Army, in partnership with organizations whose technical expertise is nationally recognized in Emergency Management.
